Sun Late

28 November 6.45pm – 10pm
Science Museum London, South Kensington
Free entry

Join super/collider for some solar themed activities. Artist Liz West will present a talk on light and perception, explaining how her artistic investigations into the nature of perception have revealed that our understanding of colour can only be realised through the presence of light. Diego Valente will be running a cyanotype workshop, intertwining one of the earliest photographic processes with modern technology, using digital images to print onto pre-sensitised cyanotype paper. There will also be an opportunity to make a solargraph camera with Anthony Carr, to capture long exposure pinhole camera photographs of the sun’s path.

More about the artists / photographers

Liz West is a British artist (b.1985) who graduated from Glasgow School of Art in 2007. West’s broad body of work encompasses wall-based artwork, sculpture, and site-specific installations. West creates vivid environments that mix luminous colour and radiant light. West aims to provoke a heightened sensory awareness in the viewer through her works. She is interested in exploring how sensory phenomena can invoke psychological and physical responses that tap into our own deeply entrenched relationships to colour. West’s investigation into the relationship between colour and light is often realised through an engagement between materiality and a given site. Our understanding of colour can only be realised through the presence of light. By playing and adjusting colour, West brings out the intensity and composition of her spatial arrangements.

Diego Valente is an artist based in London, studying an MRes at the Royal College of Art and co-director of the London Alternative Photography Collective. Valente has co-curated the London College of Communication photo book table for Offprint London at Tate Modern for two consecutive years and co-edits the S:KIN Journal together with Emma Backlund and Ramona Guntert. Group shows include Lumen: School of Light; Brighton Photo Fringe; Paper, Publication, Performance at Lychee One Gallery; Psyche Valuations at White Conduit Projects and Open Door at The Photographer’s Gallery.

Anthony Carr is an artist whose practice is in both photography and sculpture. Since graduating from Winchester School of Art with a BA in Fine Art, (specialising in Printmaking), he has developed projects in various genres from Landscape and Documentary Photography to more conceptual-based work. Carr has exhibited in a range of galleries, including Photofusion, Burghley House and FORMAT Photo Festival.
