Kim’s Video Margate: A Preview

Kim’s Video Margate: A Preview

Exhibition: 13th – 23rd September
Talk: 22nd September, 7pm – 10pm
Resort Project Space

A journey from Manhattan to Thanet via Sicily. Three islands connected via VHS tape.

In 2009 Franca Pauli and Dario Colombo acquired on behalf of the Sicilian town of Salemi a collection of 42,000+ videos that made up Kim’s Video and Music, an infamous video shop in the East Village of New York City. Described as the “go-to place for rare selections”, Kim’s Video and Music was a cult New York institution for two decades; a repository of remarkable films and a hangout for many of the key players in the East Village cultural scene of the 80s and 90s.  Now Franca seeks to develop the project in Margate.

Kim’s Video Margate: A Preview will be simultaneously an introduction to the project; a call for participation and a standalone artwork.  The story will be one of sightseeing: a collection seeking a site to call home and Resort Studios and Cliftonville as sites for new ways of seeing that collection.

Kim’s Video Margate: A Preview will comprise a video installation in the window of the Project Space showing clips from the collection. On Thursday 22nd September we will have an evening event where Franca Pauli will talk about her journey with Kim’s Video and Music and screen some rare highlights from the shop’s collection.  Franca’s talk will also be a call to action, inviting interested members of the Margate community to become involved in the project’s development.

Part of the Margate Festival programme of events, the project is co-convened by members Dan and Trish Scott, with Cliftonville resident Franca Pauli and her colleagues Dario Colombo and Glen Hyman.
